This lap is a mixture of cerium oxide and epoxy resin. It is a great lap for opals and the quartz, feldspar, and beryl families.
The cerium used in these laps is at least 99% pure.
- Lap may require break-in. Run the lap at medium speed and, with a fast water drip, burnish the surface with 240 grit wet-dry sandpaper for 3-5 seconds. Reverse direction of the lap and repeat. The surface only needs to be roughened to release the embedded cerium oxide powder.
- Do not run lap dry
- The lap only needs to be moist to function. Use of a fine mist spray bottle or a slow water drip (1 drop every 3 seconds) is recommended.
- If polishing action is slow, add a small amount of cerium oxide to the lap. A high purity cerium oxide crayon from Gearloose (gearloose.co) is recommended.
- Recommended lap speed: 60 to 300 RPM
- For best results, add a small amount of baking soda to your water supply to raise the pH to slightly alkaline (pH: 8)
Lap diameter: 8" (203 mm)
Arbor hole: 0.5" (12.7 mm)
Cerium compound thickness: 1.5 mm
Lap thickness: approx. 0.3" (7.5 mm)
